Superstition and the Aster: The most popular of the 600 different species of the Aster is the Monte Carlo. People long ago thought they could drive away serpents with the odor it produced when they burned it.
Named for fighters:Gladiolus flowers got their name because the leaves of the plant were shaped like a sword and made them think of the Roman gladiators. Street decoration: Rose petals would be thrown all over the streets during Roman public games.
