Medicinal poinsettia:During the middle ages people used the poinsettia flower as a purgative to aid in the elimination of black bile and melancholy. Named for fighters: Gladiolus flowers got their name because the leaves of the plant were shaped like a sword and made them think of the Roman gladiators.
