Violets in French history: When Napoleon died he was wearing a locket around his neck which contained violets which had been growing at Josephine's grave site.
Noble flowers:The four noble plants of the ancient Chinese were the Chrysanthemum, the Orchid, the bamboo, and the plum, and therefore only the upper class Chinese were permitted to grow them in their gardens. Named for fighters: Gladiolus flowers got their name because the leaves of the plant were shaped like a sword and made them think of the Roman gladiators.
