Violets in French history: When Napoleon died he was wearing a locket around his neck which contained violets which had been growing at Josephine's grave site.
Named for fighters:Gladiolus flowers got their name because the leaves of the plant were shaped like a sword and made them think of the Roman gladiators. Flower looks like animal: Because the Strelitzia flower looks much like the head and beak of an exotic bird they are nicknamed The Bird of Paradise.
